The July 19th CMASS Launch was the second high power launch that CMASS sponsored for the year. Besides being on the warm and windy side, a lot of people showed up and we all had a blast. My Dad came with me during this launch, and he started my flying while I finished up setting up my equipment. During the day, we launched a total of eleven rockets.

First rocket I launched was my Quest Brighthawk with a German labeled Quest C6-5. These motors are difficult to light with an Estes igniter, which I had to do because I could not find the igniter that came with the motor. After breaking two Estes igniters, I finally found the igniter that came with the motor and the resulting flight was perfect. Second up was one of my favorite rockets that I got through TRF Secret Santa, my Semroc OSO. I flew it with my favorite motor for that rocket, the Estes C6-5.

Then I got out the rocket I designed for EMRR Box-O-Parts Contest, my The Avenger. I flew it with a C6-0 staging to a C6-5. The rocket weather-cocked into the wind but it was a safe flight and it landed close to the launch range. Next up was my Estes D-Region Tomahawk, which is a rocket that had a good design, but had one major flaw… no glue known to man would stick to the plastic that the fins and nose were molded from. It had a great flight with a D12-3, but of course a fin got knocked off upon landing. Then I got out the newest rocket in my fleet, my beautifully finished Estes StormCaster. After a great flight with a D12-5, it landed in the woods! Doh!

Now that I burned some black powder, it was time to ignite some sweet smelling AP. First up was my Aerotech Sumo which took off with an Aerotech G40-4W. I mentioned this before, normally I don’t buy the Aerotech G40’s in the new molded cases because you pay more and get less performance. However, I was offered a good price for it, so I bought it. Great flight with a huge fireball and lots of smoke trailing behind it. Speaking of smoke and fire, I decided to launch my “Hotel Express” with my RMS 29/120 loaded with a G79-6W load. These motors are tricky to ignite, and this one took a second igniter to get it going, but once the motor fired, it was a cool flight.

Next up I got my upscale Stingray ready for its second flight. I chose an Aerotech H97-6J. Nice dark smoke trail on the way up provided a cool boost, but the delay was very long. It did deploy the chute in time but the guns got snapped off and one of the wing tips broke off. My other H power flight of the day was my LOC EZI-65 which I flew with a Loki H144. The motor provided an awesome boost but one of the shroud lines got tangled in the shock cord mount so the chute was not able to open fully. There was only Minor damage to the EZI.

My final two flights of the day were with AMW motors. First up was my Megablast loaded with an AWM I285 Green Gorilla. The I285 started right away thanks to a nice size chunk of blue propellant as a booster. Awesome flight followed by a perfect Dual Deploy recovery. Then I launched my LOC Phoenix with an AMW J400 Red Rhino. This was the last flight of the day, so I was happy that the motor ignited quickly and with the first try. I love how this rocket has a very nice whistle on the way up.

One other note worthy flight I saw was Borris Katan’s attempt to launch his Sirrrus Saturn V with an AMW J440 and four Aerotech G64’s. Nice liftoff but the J440 catoed at ignition. The G64’s did their best to lift the Saturn but at that point in flight they did not have enough umph to keep it going. There was no deployment so the Saturn lawn darted. Apparently what happed was the catoed motor shot up the motor tube and took out the electronics bay. Or it just had a bad cold.
